SADDLE HUT (1.052↑; 250↓; 4-5hrs; 3.566m; +/+/+)
It’s time to meet your group for the next week. We will pick you up at your hotel around 8am. The guide will present the whole team with a heartwarming welcome and introduction of porters, the cook and the rest of the team. You will get a nice first impression through typical Tanzanian songs which follow you the whole way up to “Big Meru”. It takes us 2hrs by car (passing a supermarket in the meanwhile) to get to the Momella Gate (1.500m). Your guide will sign you up and arrange all payments for the National Park. Before starting our trek you will get a lunch box and softdrinks to strengthen yourself for a nice trip. Around 11am we’re starting our trekking tour. You and your team, which includes always a park ranger, will pass the National Park of Arusha which is an amazing feeling crossing these wide fields by foot and seeing giraffes, buffalos, pumbas and all other safari animals. After 1hrs we are entering the big rainforest and passing some roads as well as crossing the jungle off the beaten track – Always behind the ranger who clears the way for you. It’s quite easy to walk and moderately steep. We recommend wearing long trousers to protect yourself from prickly plants or animals, as well as protecting your head with a cap. So excited about what awaits you around the next corner or which animal you will meet, you will reach your first camp after 6hrs of walking around 5pm. You will sign up yourself within the Camp book directly after arrival and will move into the Huts. You can expect 4-dorm-bed-rooms and will get hot water for washing at 5.30pm. Dinner will be ready at 6pm and the day finds a happy end with a nice briefing of your guide for the next day.
SUMMIT + MIRIAKAMBA CAMP (1.000↑; 2.063↓; 4.566m; +/+/+)
We will wake you up at 11pm, you will get a short and little breakfast and we will start the Summit tour at midnight. With forelights you will follow the guide up to the “Rhino point” (3.806m). It’s getting stony and windy, especially when you pass the crater rims – so use more slices of clothing and a windstopper as well. Around 5-6hrs and a very steep ascend you will reach the Peak of Mount Meru and can enjoy the most amazing view on the volcano crater you can imagine. Take a look behind the wooden Shield of Mount Meru and have a look at your beautiful sunrise and the Kilimanjaro in the distance. After 15-30 minutes and lots of pictures, we will make yourself the way down back to the Saddle Hut, which you reach around 10/11am. Cup of hot tea/water/juice is waiting for you and you can take a rest for 2hrs. Before we will start our way down to Miriakamba Camp (2.503m) you will get a hot lunch to strengthen your way down. After 2.5hrs you will reach the Camp from day 2 and can enjoy the afternoon. Your body need time to relax and we will offer you hot water for washing. Be prepared for a dinner at 6pm and enjoy what you’ve reached so far. You can be very proud of yourself! Mount Meru is famous for being tougher than Kilimanjaro, because it’s very steep. When you reached this so far, you will be ready to think about your next tour up to Kilimanjaro.
MOMELLA GATE + HOTEL (1.103↓; 4hrs; +/+/+)
Last time your alarm clock rings at 6.30am and we will bring you tea/Coffee to your bed to wake up slowly. Hot water for washing at 7am, breakfast at 7.30am and start to trek down at 8am. Use your walking sticks the way down. Depending on the weather it could get muddy and slippery. Be careful and follow the motto “Pole, Pole” – we don’t wanna risk any injuries on your last meters. Crossing the Rainforest, listening to waterfalls and watching animals while rethinking about the day before seems quite meditating. After 2-3 hrs you will again reach the wide fields of the national park and can walk through herds of giraffes, buffalos or Pumbas. One hour later you have already reached the Momella Gate (1.500m) and finished your trip to Mount Meru. Around noon you get a hot lunch at the gate and time to pass the Souvenir shop of masai, before leaving the gate heading to your hotel (+2.5hrs.)
Hint:This means a day of 11 to 12 hours of walking! That’s very intense and if you are not well advanced in walking for so many hours, we highly recommend booking the 4 days trip.
