When To Travel

The best time to travel to climb Kilimanjaro/Mount Meru is during the dry season – from December to mid March, and from late June to October. The best months are January, February, July, August, September and October.

Generally the following seems quite common: From mid december to mid of march you will get a dry but also very cold season (On the mountain!). That in specific means, snow is most likely your companion, but at least on the peak. The advantage of this season is obvious: less travelers.

The rain season starts very rough during March and continues over April, from time to time till mid of may. We know people who got their best experience traveling to Mount Meru during the German Pentecost holidays, which was from mid of may till end of may. Our guests were the only ones on the mountain, the only guests on the peak, and the only guests in the cottages. THIS cannot be more private than anything else. So it’s definitely worth thinking about it.

The dry and “warm” season on the mountains starts then from June with their peak of the season in August and September and runs till October. You can expect around 5 degrees on the top of Africa, snow also because of the glacier, but the paths were free to go and without snow at all. This time means one slice of clothes less than in Q1 of a year.

November is another month with rain. So we would not suggest book tours during this time of a season. It’s possible but not really recommended.

Our Social Projects

Children Education

Children in Tanzania have the choice of three different school systems: Public, Private, International. Depending on the salary of the parents they will choose the future education of their children, which is mostly the free version of a public school. Public schools teach their children only in Swahili, and offer 1 subject in english. Private schools, on the contrary, teach all subjects in English and only 1 subject in Swahili. School fees were around 2mio TZS/year, which is around 660$. Locals were rarely able to afford the money for international schools (20.000-30.000$/year). This mostly is only a chance for rich people. Education is the most important good (next to healthiness) which prepares the children for a better future. That’s why we use your donations for children to provide them with a good education and pay their fees. Thank you so much for your donation and support!

Adult Education

If you ever had the chance to speak to a mountain Crew and ask them what is their personal biggest wish, then it would be to have an option for a better personal education, starting to learn another language. All of them started as a porter, did this heavy job for several years. If you were lucky and could pay for example taking German lessons in school to learn the language better, you will have the chance to get promoted to be a Guide. So we decided to support “Adult education” by providing an opportunity to learn the language of their choice. All guides speak fluent English, some of them speak good german.

School Building

African Peaks Tours support building schools for children in Burundi. “Brick by brick for a better future” - Ibuye Ku Rindi. Ibuye works together with Jean-Marie Kazitonda. Jean-Marie had the idea 5 years ago to give children in his home country a chance. The project is supervised locally by his niece. Burundi is the second poorest country in the world. There is no functioning school system. The children living there therefore have no chance of a better life.

Employee Healthiness

In Tanzania there is no chance to afford health insurance with the little budget the locals earn. Unfortunately, this is only a privilege for the fewest. For this reason, the crew collects a certain amount from everyone after each tour to save it for the community: In the event of an accident, or a necessary visit to the doctor by any team member, the team sticks together and donates the necessary money to make it possible. We want to make our contribution here and, with your help, enable our team to invest in their own health and make simple visits to the doctor possible.

Street dogs

Those whose heart beats for animals will see a lot in Tanzania. Street dogs on street dogs, emaciated and almost every female has puppies or will have them soon because there are simply no castrations here. The dogs don't belong to anyone and so nobody cares about them. A few households keep dogs as ‘pets’, but they are only used to guard the house and yard. They are kept in kennels during the day and let loose at night to keep watch. We support street dogs with high-quality food and thus help at least the puppies to become strong and vigorous.
